Enter Longghost, a surfer who had something and maybe still does. Just ask Will Marvel, flaneur of larval host plants, or April Darious, ex of Marvel and post-ex of Longghost, or Zach Ballad, former Mo'reapy Raider and master of capers. You could ask others, too, if they were still alive. Longghost, you see, can be a tad dangerous to be around.
When Miles runs into Longghost in Peirce, Arizona, he knows something is up. True, their home town, Arcadia, California, is a gone world, but why would Longghost settle in close to him in Lonesome Valley? Maybe, he speculates, when it comes to a ghost, it always takes two.
Maybe, but look instead for a left-behind X, a Mo'reapy long since. Follow Coyote Gulch, not far from Longghost's ranch, Calabooza, to a juniper full of Tibetan prayer flags. An inscribed rock among some scattered seashells marks the spot. All Longghost has to do, before word gets out, is dig it up first—it being a strongbox of drug money.
Like a western movie? Hijinks galore, even unexpected gunfire? Might be too normal for this bunch. Anyway, another realm awaits in the Laughing Jesus Tepee, home of Will Marvel and a habitat of Blue Moon Butterflies. It's where Miles learns of a stranger in the wings.
Soon, among Longghost, Zach, and April, a secret pact is in the air . . . fellowship, maybe even a secret society. Pretty to think so, ponders Miles, but he's convinced it'll take more than "fellowing" to decide their fate. Sure, the right moment might reveal a spooky kicker, the real secret. But as surfer Miki Dora once said, "A real secret will get you dead."
